This Week in STEM: The Bike Lock of the Future

Innovative design and engineering can find its way into even the most mundane products.  For example, who would have ever thought you can take something as boring as a U-lock for a bike, add a little technology and make it more functional?

The makers of Skylock have incorporated Bluetooth and WiFi to create an intelligent bike lock that can communicate with your smartphone.  It can unlock itself just by walking up to it (via Bluetooth) and – if you connect it to a local WiFi network, it can alert you if someone tries to tamper with your bike.  It also has a built-in accelerometer that can detect if you crash on your bike and offer to call for help.  Plus, with the built-in solar panel, it never needs new batteries.

That is the beauty of innovative design and engineering – you can take products that are functional and make them even better!
